Most football fans (and people) don’t know much about the Central Asian country of Tajikistan. Or at least, they didn’t until the coronavirus pandemic resulted in the Tajik football league being one of the only active football competitions in the world.  Now, the country’s football is free to watch online, and the national association has…

The 1950 FIFA World Cup: A Brazilian Tragedy

Moacyr Barbosa was heralded as one of the finest goalkeepers in the world throughout the 1940s and 50s. The unbeatable colossus stood in goal for the Seleção during what should have been their finest honour – glory at their own World Cup. It wasn’t to be for the team, the shining stars of a country…

    Debate: Coronavirus Pandemic

    1) In light of the current Coronavirus outbreak, should we be postponing games instead of continuing to play them, either publicly or behind closed doors? Andrew Flint: I think we’re at the stage now where postponing games for a short period would make sense, but only if it is implemented across the board by UEFA.…

Denis Irwin: Manchester United & Sir Alex Ferguson’s Mr Reliable

This May sees the 30th anniversary of Manchester United’s 1989/90 FA Cup victory, a campaign which began in the 3rd round against Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest. Debate: Financial Fair Play

What is your opinion on Financial Fair Play (FFP)? Richard Pike: As a Wigan Athletic supporter, I have a mixed opinion on FFP. Matchdays: Hearts Relegation Battle

Pathetic fallacy is literary tool used to attribute human emotion to aspects of nature. I went to Tynecastle last Saturday to see Heart of Midlothian, one of the UK’s most historic clubs. As a child, my brother – a Preston fan – told me I should support my hometown club. So I did. I’m a Blackburn Rovers fan. Now there are many clubs in my life. I married a Man Utd fan; my brother-in-law is a Man City fan; my parents have season tickets at Accrington. So I have at one time or another attended games for all those clubs. I’m a football fan and of course an honorary Canadian!
